Characteristics

Dwarf shrublet, stems many tufted from crown of woody taproot, crown up to c. 15 mm in diam., stems 100-400 mm long, erect or decumbent, simple or loosely virgately branched, puberulous, hairs up to 0.1 mm long, usually patent, sunken glands as well, sometimes oozing, closely leafy. Leaves opposite, quickly alternate upwards, fascicled, largest primary leaves 4.5-14 x 0.8-1.3 mm, oblong or oblong-elliptic, apex obtuse to subacute, bluntly apiculate, base broad, margins entire, thickened, texture thick, midrib raised on lower surface, invisible above, glandular-punctate, sometimes oozing, otherwise glabrous; axillary leaves similar but often longer than the subtending primary. Inflorescence composed of spikes c. 4-6 x 4-6 mm in first flower, elongating to c. 10-25 mm in fruit, lower flowers then becoming distant, arranged in narrow terminal panicles, peduncles leafy, c. 5-15 mm long, often simple, sometimes sparingly branched. Bract adnate to calyx tube, lowermost 1.8-3.2 x 0.8-1.2 mm, ovate-elliptic, subacute, base concave, hairs c. 0.1-0.15 mm long on margins, minute globular glands on back. Pedicels wanting. Calyx 1.5-2 mm long, usually obliquely 3-lobed, sometimes irregularly 4-5-lobed or 2-lobed by abortion of posticous lobe, anticolateral lobes 1-1.5 x 0.8-1.2 mm, deltoid, hairs 0.15-0.25 mm long on margins, outside 0.1-0.15 mm long on keels in particular, scattered globular glands as well. Corolla tube (1.8-)2-3 mm long (smaller when flowers female), broadly funnel-shaped, limb 3-4 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 1-1.4 x 0.5-0.8 mm or occasionally lip undivided, anticous lobe 1.2-2.25 x 0.8-1 mm, all lobes oblong-elliptic, white. Stamens: posticous filaments 0.8-2.2 mm long, anticous filaments 1.3-3.1 mm, all anthers well to far exerted. Stigma and style 2-4.5 mm long, style glabrous or sometimes a few minute globular glands and/or acute hairs. Ovary c. 0.4 x 0.3 mm. Cocci 1.3-1.8 x 0.9-1 mm, red-brown, smooth.
